Desktop CO2 lasers are usually seen as large gantry machines built for cutting and compact galvo lasers designed for high-speed marking. The ComMarker COX aims to combine the advantages of both, by pairing a 40W RF metal tube with a high-speed galvo system and optional slide extension.
Unlike traditional glass-tube gantry CO2 lasers, the COX is designed for businesses that prioritize production speed, engraving precision, and compact workspace efficiency rather than large-format cutting alone.
To see how the ComMarker COX performs out of its features, we tested it on a variety of common materials used by makers, Etsy sellers, sign shops, and small businesses.

One feature that immediately stands out is the autofocus.
With built-in LiDAR sensor, the laser automatically measures the distance and moves the laser head into the standard engraving distance with one single click.
For users switching from traditional laser systems, or users just stepping into laser engraving, this speeds up setup workflow while reducing focus errors.
For small businesses producing dozens of customized products every day, this improves production consistency across batches.

Engraving Test Results
We tried the COX across several common applications.
Photo Engraving on Coated Metal
Although bare metal cannot be engraved with a CO2 laser, coated metals such as business cards and tumblers work very well. The laser peels the paint without marking the metal below, offering a clean, high-contrast result without risking surface deformation.
The RF metal tube produces a finer and more stable beam than traditional glass CO2 tubes, helping preserve subtle grayscale transitions in photo engraving.

A black anodized metal card was engraved with 400 DPI and 600 DPI slight brightness adjustments with default recommended setting. The result was improved after adjustment.
This makes the COX a practical choice for businesses offering personalized tumblers and promotional gifts.

Wood Engraving
Wood is where the COX really begins to shine.
Testing included:

| Basswood photo engraving | Solid maple rounds (2 passes) |
The combination of the RF metal tube and galvo scanning delivers crisp details while reducing engraving time compared with conventional gantry CO2 machines.
Interestingly, engraving on end grain maple appeared even more consistent than flat grain surfaces, making it an excellent option for premium signs and gift products.
For sign shops and gift businesses, this combination of speed and fine detail can significantly increase daily production capacity.
Leather Laser Engraving
Faux leather laser engraving turned out exceptionally well.
The laser produced:
| Dark, high-contrast markings | Clean edges | Fine logo details |

Unlike diode lasers that often struggle with consistency on synthetic leather, the ComMarker COX delivered repeatable engraving quality across multiple samples.
Perfect business applications for: Hat patches; Wallets; Journals; Keychains;Promotional products.
Because the galvo system completes small designs within seconds, the ComMarker COX is especially well suited for leather patch businesses handling batch orders.
Felt Cutting
One impressive demonstration involved cutting a complex logo from felt.
The design contained extremely thin internal details that would have been difficult to cut manually with scissors. The COX produced clean edges while preserving tiny features.

The high-speed galvo system makes short-run production significantly faster than manually cutting intricate fabric designs, helping small craft businesses improve productivity without sacrificing precision.
Slate/Stone Engraving
Slate and stones are favored personalized gift items.
The COX engraved a detailed photograph on a garden rock with excellent contrast and surprisingly fine detail.

Fine grayscale transitions remained visible throughout the engraving, demonstrating the stable beam quality provided by the RF metal laser source.
Ideal products include: Slate coasters and Memorial plaques
Glass & Crystal
Glass engraving produced a frosted appearance with crisp detail.
This means the ComMarker COX is capable of producing: Awards; Wine glasses and Decorative ornaments
Compared with standard glass-tube CO2 lasers, the RF laser produces finer beam quality, resulting in cleaner and sharper result on glass surfaces.

However, CO2 laser engravers create larger glass engraving spots than UV laser engravers, and cannot produce inner glass engraving.
If glass engraving is your largest business income, check the performance of our ComMarker Omni X UV laser engraver at UV, CO2, fiber, diode laser glass engraving comparison.
Acrylic Laser Engraving Performance
For many sign makers, acrylic is the material where the COX’s speed advantage becomes most noticeable.

The laser handled both Clear acrylic and Colored acrylic with excellent engraving quality, while the galvo scanning system completes engraving dramatically faster than traditional gantry machines.

ComMarker COX can engrave and cut 3 mm acrylic fast, making it attractive for LED signs, keychains and other display pieces
In the acrylic map project, we switched to the larger 200 mm lens, which increased the working area for this project. If you are worried about larger lens brings the risk of less precision, thanks to the 8× beam expander that minimizes the focal spot size, even the one-millimeter-tall tiny text remained highly legible.

It is also worth noticing that like most galvo systems, the beam enters the material at a slight angle because it originates from a fixed scanning head rather than moving perpendicular like a gantry machine.
Software Experience Beginner-Friendly
ComMarker Studio keeps the workflow simple.
Features include:
- Layer management
- Material library
- Parameter editing
- Preview framing
- Rotary support
- Slide extension support
- Autofocus integration
